China says U.S. should agree to disagree

CHINA has indicated that the criticism by the U.S. and Britain over its decision to veto a sanctions vote against Zimbabwe was unwarranted and countries should agree to disagree

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said Thursday that political dialogue and negotiation were "the only correct path" to solve the Zimbabwe crisis and no amount of interference would bring peace to the Southern African country.

Liu Jianchao said these remarks at a press conference after being quizzed on the United States' dissatisfaction on China's veto.

"China and the United States hold a different stance on this issue. I believe that the U.S. side is very clear on China's attitude," said Jianchao.

He added, "it is natural that China and the United States have different opinions on different international issues."

China and Russia vetoed a U.S. and British-drafted resolution in the UN Security Council on July 11 that sought to impose sanctions on Zimbabwe.

• The Zim situation is not about a stolen election. The situation goes back to 1994 when Blair used renaging on the Lancaster house agreement as a campaign tool. He won labour leadership that year and went on to be PM in 97. To mugabe this was an indicator that land would not be compensated for by the british. He sent in the invaders the following year.

Since then, the world is polarized over Zim, with the West on one side and the rest on the other. The battle in Zim is that of ideology and each side is doing everything for the greater good including murder, propaganda, coersion and even sanctions.

Britain seems to be getting a raw deal from the US after being dragged into the Iraq war. But for pride and honour, they have to go through small Zim together. They should have been best placed that the Russia and China are diametrically opposed to the West. After all they wonn't touch coz it's hot. Too big a problem. I want solutions in my country, not diatribe and rhetoric. As China puts it, people can disagree amicably
