THE UNITED KINGDOM’S leading Muslim youth organisation, The Ramadhan Foundation says it welcomes and celebrates the capture of former Serbian wartime leader and war crimes suspect, Radovan Karadzic in Belgrade last night.
Karadzic was captured after a 13 year long hunt. He is alleged to be responsible for Europe’s worst civilian massacre that took place in the UN protected town of Srebrenica. Thousands of men, women and children were brutally slaughtered during the 1992-1995 Bosnian war
In a statement sent to the Zimbabwe Guardian Monday, the Foundation said: “The moment for justice has arrived for millions of Bosnian Muslims and Croats who lost loved ones and saw them driven from their homes and communities.”
The newly appointed Chief Executive, Mohammed Shafiq, Chief Executive of the Foundation said it was a shame that Europe allowed this ‘20th Century Holocaust’ to happen on its doorstep.
“Whilst celebrating his capture, we also remember with sadness and sorrow the millions of victims of the Bosnian war, this was Europe’s 20th century Holocaust and it was a matter of shame that Europe allowed this massacre to go on under their noses,” said Shafiq
He continued, “I urge the Serbian Government to send him (Karadzic) to The Hague immediately so that he can be charged and put on trial for his murderous crimes, we further urge increased work to capture the Serb military leader Ratko Mladic so that victims can see justice done and this distressing chapter of war crimes can be closed.”
“We commend all those involved in his capture and look forward to his appearance at The Hague.”
The Ramadhan works “for peaceful co-existence and dialogue for all communities,” and is based in Greater Manchester.
