AT LEAST three people were reportedly killed and several injured when a wooden floor in a bar in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital collapsed onto a restaurant located below on Thursday evening.
Sidewalk Cafe, located near Zimbabwe's Reserve Bank, collapsed at around 9 pm (2000 GMT), witnesses on the scene told the Zimbabwe Guardian.
Several people were in the bar drinking beer and dancing when the floor collapsed.
“The accident came as a shock to everyone. At first I wasn’t sure what exactly was going on until I found myself in a restaurant located below Sidewalk,” said an eyewitness to a Zimbabwe Guardian reporter.
“A lot of people are actually in shock. Ambulances took several injured people from the site to Parirenyatwa hospital where several of them are being treated at the moment.”
Police pulled out several bodies from the debris and at least three people were confirmed dead on the site. They died from the stampede that followed the collapse, according to eyewitnesses on the scene.
Police cordoned off the area and rescue workers were at the scene.
