ECONET wireless mobile service has resumed work Chinese company ZTE and Sweden’s Ericsson have resumed the work to expand the Econet wireless network throughout Zimbabwe after being suspended for three months following political unrest in the country.
.The company's CEO, Douglas Mboweni, said in a market update last week that the two companies are expected to complete the work by November after suspending work during the March and June presidential and parliamentary elections.
Ericsson is providing the equipment to expand the company's core network made of switching systems, prepaid systems and intelligent network platforms, while ZTE is supplying radio base stations and building new sites in remote rural areas and along the country's highways.
The two companies have already completed the first phase of the Econet wireless expansion project, which has already increased the company's subscriber base from 650, 000 to 870,000.
With completion of the first phase of the expansion, more than 220,000 lines have been released because of the increased capacity of the prepaid system, Mboweni said.
At the end of the expansion project, the company hopes for subscriber capacity of 1.3 million.
