Zanu PF Politburo welcomes Sadc support

Thu, 21 Aug 2008 11:43:00 +0000

THE highest decision making body of the Zanu PF party met on Thursday and commended Southern African Development Community (Sadc) Heads of State and Government for their support of the ongoing inter-party talks between the ruling party and the two formations of the Movement for Democratic Change.

The politburo met Thursday morning.

Zanu PF Deputy Secretary for Information and Publicity, Ephraim Masawi, said the politburo was encouraged by the efforts of the regional body and gave the greenlight to President Mugabe to reconvene parliament.

Masawi also indicated that Sadc was convinced that the July 27 run-off presidential election was held in accordance with the Constitution of Zimbabwe recognizing the election of President Mugabe.

The politburo meets again on Saturday to endorse the appointment of Members of Parliament and Senators and the convening of Parliament.

The Zanu PF party has been pushing for parliament to be reconvened since opposition MDC’s Morgan Tsvangirai walked away from a meeting with the Zanu PF party and the other formation of the MDC led by Professor Arthur Mutambara. .

Sadc failed to resolve a disagreement between President Mugabe and Tsvangirai on how they would share power in an all-inclusive government.

Reconvening parliament will mean that President Mugabe will be recognized by the opposition as President.
