THE ruling Zanu PF party did not confirm a candidate for the key post of parliamentary speaker on Monday, leaving the role to be filled by the opposition.
Zimbabwe's parliament, which was sworn on Monday morning is due to elect a new speaker but only Morgan Tsvangirai's main opposition Movement for Democratic Change and a breakaway faction led by Professor Arthur Mutambara nominated candidates for the post.
Tsvangirai's MDC has nominated national chairman Lovemore Moyo as speaker, while Mutambara has put forward senior party member Paul Themba Nyathi for the same position, according to the opposition party officials.
Although Zanu PF has not confirmed its candidate for the speaker post, it is believed that the party will put forward its chairman, John Nkomo, for one of the most powerful posts in Zimbabwe politics.
