Biti, Tsvangirai differ on summit attendance

AFP/Zim Guardian reporters

Sun, 02 Nov 2008 06:32:00 +0000

THE opposition Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai on Saturday dropped conditions on attending the next full Southern African Development Community (Sadc) summit even if he does not receive his passport dropping conditions he and his party set last week.

The chief negotiator and Secretary General of the MDC, Tendai Biti, had told reporters on Tuesday that Tsvangirai would not travel to the summit unless he received his passport, although the MDC leader spent the whole of last year travelling on an emergency travel document (ETD).

But Tsvangirai defied the hardline position of his Secretary General, and told reporter that he would attend the summit even if the government refused to grant him a passport.

"With or without a passport, I will attend," he told AFP news agency in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second city going against the hardline position of Biti.

This is not the first time the two leaders have sung from different hymn books. Earlier this year Biti opposed the convening of Parliament arguing that it meant that the opposition MDC party recognized Mugabe as President of Zimbabwe. Tsvangirai, at the time, issued a statement that the convening of Parliament was necessary.

Insider reports from the MDC party suggest that the two leaders have clashed several times on strategy leading to the issuance of different statements on policy and related issues.

Tsvangirai has not had a passport for almost a year, and must seek an ETD each time he leaves the country.

Biti had called the government's failure to grant him a normal passport "the crudest form of lack of sincerity" by President Robert Mugabe.

Leaders from the 15-nation Sadc are expected to hold an emergency summit aimed at pressing Tsvangirai and Mugabe to resolve their differences on forming an all-inclusive government.

The rivals agreed to a power-sharing deal on September 15, but talks have stalled over how to divide control of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Regional leaders met twice last month in a bid to facilitate the power-sharing agreement, but they remain deadlocked over control of the home affairs ministry.

The date and location of the summit have not yet been announced.

Ying Yang can I please ask what you think is in your contribution that could cause it not to be published? After reading your comment more than twice I then thought you might be using some euphemism that I may have failed to grasp the gist of. There is nothing truthfully worthy anyone's worry let alone the editor in your comment to say the least but I will tell you why the editor may get abusive comments. Abusive language is a frustrated concession of defeat in the battle of civilised debate. As for me I will be careful on what I wish for because by not throwing my comment for public scrutiny, the editor may actually be cruel to be kind to my naked comments.

Ying Yang- Tsvangirai and his MDC-T called for the sanctions to be imposed on Zim. To date, Tsvangirai and his family have been cushioned from these sanctions because his daughters are in Australia and his wife and other children are living in South Africa. Tsvangirai and his party (MDC-T) have received millions of dollars from foreign govts and individuals. So Tsvangirai and the MDC-T elite are cushioned from the effects of the 1million plus inflation that is ravaging the lives of ordinary Zimbabweeans. Let Tsvangirai experience the effects of the sanctions by not having a passport. Why does he want to gallavant all over the place for?Calling for more sanctions against Zim?Thousands of Zims are travelling on these ELTDs.Being a leader of the opposition or prime minister designate does not bestow any special status. It is obscene and against humanity that anyone should go to bed hungry. It is inhumane for anyone to needlessly die because of lack of medication. Access to affordable food, medication and education are basic human rights which are being violated with impunity in Zim because of the illegal sanctions. This is the time for patriotic Zims to organise themselves and say enough is enough. Those without food and medicine or struggling to make ends meet in Zim should organise and demonstrate peacefully to demand food and the lifting of sanctions against Zim. Demonstrate/demand food and the lifting of sanctions at the US , UK, EU embassies in Harare. They imposed the sanctions and should now feed the people.Demonstrate and demand to be given food and the lifting of sanctions at Tsvangirai's house and the MDC-T's elite houses. They called for the sanctions and should now feed the people. Demonstrate and demand to be given food at the offices of NGOs who have been colluding and conniving with the MDC-T. Word has it that the NGOs have warehouses full of food that they are not distributing, Demand that they give you this food. Don't let your loved ones die unnecessarily.
A diplomatic passport for Tsvangirai does not put food on the table. MDC-T lording over the Home Affairs does not put food on the table for the ordinary Zim. Zims demonstrate peacefully daily and in large numbers at these venues until you get the food and have sanctions lifted.

Ying Yang you missed an important point. Mr Tsvangirai asked for further sanctions on Zimbabwe that week he spend in the Dutch Embassy. After that the Germany company that supplies us with paper stopped supplying Zimbabwe.Mr Tsvangirayi forgot that sanctions harm not only Mugabe but all of us Zimbabweans. I am glad he does not have a passport. He should feel the pain and dehumanising aspects of sanctions

Lets wait until he is sworn in as Prime Minister, then he can be given the Diplomatic passport that will be comensurate with his new acquired status.

For now , SANCTIONS SANCTIONS SANCTIONS-targeted ones at that. No hurry giving him a passport, there are deserving patriotic Zimbabweans in the queue

although the MDC leader spent the whole of last year travelling on an emergency travel document (ETD). So the liars say they had no paper for a whole year? But it's a lie from beginning to end. Tsvangirai has not been travelling on ETD's for a whole year and there is paper because people are getting new passports every day. So you are telling lies - yet again.
No wonder the MDC sends out conflicting messages. It's to keep the liars confused.
I'm sure you won't publish this because your zanupf handlers have great difficulty witht the truth.
