THIS is neither fiction nor opinion. Its fact! Zimbabwe is one landlocked country endowed with some of the best raw talent the world over. I have come a long way to arrive at this and I am sticking with it until Kingdom come.
I will pick a few examples though to prove my case. I am not being mathematical. So please don’t give me any counter examples because you wont need them.(ehhh, I have got my own--counter examples, i mean if need be).
Before this ink dries today, a dance group called Nemesis based in Milton KeynesUK is in the finals of Simon Cowell’s ‘Britain’s Got Talent’. And I only found out today (damn this dissertation writing!), when I switched on my telly to be greeted with some serious choreographed moves of the highest order that would make Michael Jackson green with envy. Not only that. The young man acting as spokesperson for the group hit me with a heavy Shona accent (speaking English of course) and I didn’t need anyone to tell or convince me he was from Zimbabwe. Rather like when that Makosi first appeared on that creepy Big Brother Show. Not that I think she is talented though. Prancing around in the nude, where is the talent in that? I digress!
Nemesis features Tapfuma Minya and Ishe Chirimuuta. Whatever the outcome today, they are destined for stardom, assuming they don’t actually pip the other groups in the talent show to the £100 000 prize money and a place to perform at the Royal Variety Show.
Many people living in UK might not know a Bulawayo born beauty called Lucia Evans who has made the shockwaves in The Republic of Ireland. She won their X-factor version of You’re A Star in 2006 beating the Sullivan brothers into second place on her way to claiming a recording contract with Sony. After a slightly tempestuous start, she went back home to find herself and has finally released her own single The Other Man now available for download.
A couple weeks ago Cynthia Mare was opening for Busta Rhymes in London. Sexy, Saultry, Sassy! Way to go ebony sister!
Mutare born, Norah Chipaumire, the soulful former Radio 3 jock (The Flygirl) in late 1980s has resurfaced years later in New York doing serious damage in theatre, not only finding fortune, but fame in the process. Watching her go through her paces in her debut solo act Chimurenga, whilst dancing to Thomas Mapfumo’s Gwindingwi Rine Shumba Inoruma is an emotional experience that left me close to tears. Please Norah stop it! But then don’t! This experience Chimurenga reminds me of my niece bombed by the ubiquitously evil Ian Smith that fateful afternoon in 1979 .That beauty of ours now lies in a mass grave somewhere in Mutungagore. Enough said!
In spite of the steep challenges that Zimbabwe is facing, today I am finally happy to announce, I am proud to be Zimbabwean!
