Mandela bans Naomi Campbell from his concert

Fri, 27 Jun 2008 09:58:00 +0000

NELSON Mandela has banned Naomi Campbell from appearing on stage at his 90th birthday concert.

He is reportedly upset by Naomi's behavior over the past few months which includes assaulting two police officers on a British Airways flight in April and being sentenced to 200 hours community service for the offence — he has personally requested she be taken off the program from the star-studded event in London on Friday .

A source told Britain's Daily Mail online: "Nelson himself intervened and she was pulled off the list. He was disappointed with her recent arrest — particularly as she was wearing a baseball cap bearing the name of his AIDS-awareness charity, 46664, at the time.”

Naomi was slated to introduce some of the acts on stage as she has done with 46664 concerts in the past, but she has been informed that this time she can only sit in the grandstand."

46664 is the number of his prison cell at Robben Island where he was incarcerated for almost three decades.

Naomi has always been close to Mandela, and even calls him her 'honorary grandfather’.

She is said to have visited him for advice on handling her anger after she was arrested for throwing a mobile phone at her housekeeper in 2006.

• I am shocked by the commends made by some readers about Nelson Mandela. For anyone to say Nelson Mandela is a sell out simply because he had his charity do in London is purely racist and shallow minded. There is no need for any one to waste their energy talking about how much Nelson Mandela scrificed his own freedom and life for fellow blacks the world over. Nelson Mandela is an icon of freedom, a true African statesman.
Unlike some African leaders who blow their trumpet about fighting for African freedom Mandela leaves that to the people. Mandela's wisdom, tolerance and sacrifice is the light that will shine beyond race, colour, religion or creed. These are the facts.
People of Zimbabwe should rise above these primitive racial ideas and move with the times and join the rest of the world lest they get left behind. If our leaders in Zanu PF are so anti white/west then why are they sending their children to Universities in the West instead of the local ones. Please Zimbabweans you need to work up because these leaders don't do as they preach.

• I find it deeply disturbing that for a black man to be considered a hero he has to suck up to European ideals. Mandela gladly does this. While he is within his rights to have partied in London while many go hungry in Soweto, it still leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.
I will not want to be defending Naomi Campbell because from what is written about her, she does truly nasty things but benching her and have Amy Winehouse perform at your show is double standards to the extreme. One has anger issues and is violent while the other a sad druggie who shouldn`t be given the platform to show kids its ok to do drugs becoz they get you publicity is shameful. Taking a hardline on Naomi should also have been backed up by similar action on Amy. This much like our beloved MDC who boycott a presidential run off coz its too violent and grossly unfair while fielding candidates in parliamentary elections that run on the same day...A classic case of contradicting oneself.
The sad thing about a black hero in Europeans eyes is that he has to be someone who forgave them for the wrongs they have done to blacks as Mugabe did after independence and Mandela much later. While the Europeans are very unforgiving and would gladly paint a Blackman who doesn't tow their line a bitter sad dictator.
Will they take kindly to an African telling the UK to install Cameron as the Prime Minister because Gordon Brown has caused widespread sufffering by being an architect of the UK economy that was seeming doing well for a decade when in reality it was only a debt bubble which has brought about the credit crunch. The credit crunch has also cost lives through stress and so on.
Its sad Mandela gives a seal of aproval to these actions by his mere presence and a few lines that can condemn a nation to sanctions costing yet more lives.
Mandela was heroic for being steadfast and holding on to his beliefs for 27 years, I feel sad having to write thing that sully the standing of a great man but he simply has to stop being used as celebrity endorsement to putting the yoke of slavery back on our necks. Our minds were enslaved hence we need him to be using an African approach than fronting European views.

• Mandela's a sell out. Why hold birthday party in London instead of Jo'burg? Surrounded by whites instead of blacks. He achieved nothing to benefit black Africa. Keeps appeasing the whites. He critisizes Zimbabwe's leadership only after being given a piece of cake..selling out for a piece of cake..it's a shame.

• Mandela sold out FULL STOP. There is no point being missed fungai.

What did Mandela say when poor black people were being fed to lions by whites? NOTHING.

What did Mandela say when poor black people were being killed recently in SA? NOTHING

What did Mandela said about more sanctions being considered by US to Zimbabwe? NOTHING

Then he has the guts to open his mouth and say there is a leadership failer in Zimba. Naomi have been sentenced already by the law of land, why did mandela feel that it was not enough and pass his second judgement to naomi.

Go hang Mandela, africa is better without you.

• I think we are all missing the point and turning a non-racial issue to vent and misdirect issues.

Mandela didnt feel that Naomi's behaviour was in line with his principles and what he stands for, hence its his decision, and his alone.

You can have oyur party, and if you dont want someone coming to that party, you are free to accept or decline guests.

• The more you sell out, the more accolades you get and Mandela is typical of that breed of African Leader. What did he actually achieve for the black South Africans during his tenure of office?Absolutely nothing.Tutu, Sentamu and Mandela are in the same league of self-hating Africans.

• Mandela is not the saint the West portrays him to be. The man is a sell out. He has done nothing for the majority of black South African except create a black elite of billionaires like Toky Sexwale, Cyril Ramaphosa. Blacks are now worse off because of him.

• This can't be true?
It's just an allegation, right?

So Mandela would not allow a Black woman into his party? But Mandela would cause the African ancestors to turn in their graves by allowing the white man's deviance to become South African government policy, and tarnish the image of Africans leadership for all times?

No doubt Mandela's boyfriend put him up to slight Naomi. lol
Want to bet that Mandela is entertaining whites with far more faults than Naomi?
