ZIMBABWE had made great strides in empowering women, surpassing many countries on the continent.

The country was hailed for enacting laws that protect women from all forms of discrimination, although there is still concern over the pace of implementation of some of the laws.

Several organisations that represent the rights of women and advocate for women’s empowerment in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Women Lawyers Association (ZWLA) have compiled a report that will be tabled at the United Nations Committee on Elimination of Discrimination Against Women in Geneva in February.

Speaking on the sidelines of a ceremony to launch the report, ZWLA Board Chairperson, Mrs Virgina Mudimu said the country has made strides in formulating laws that protect women from all forms of discrimination.

She added that the upcoming Geneva Conference will be used as a platform to lobby for broader based participation, implementation and protection of women in all spheres of life.

A legal expert and Director of a local women’s lobby group, Ms Emilia Muchawa says the report will form the basis for action to be taken by government and the UN on policies affecting the rights and status of women in society.

Zimbabwe ratified the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) on the 13th of may 1991 and by doing so agreed to abide by the international standards in improving the rights of women.

Zimbabwe will be presenting its 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th periodic reports to the UN committee during the 51st session, which will take place in Geneva from the 15th to the 22nd of February.

The report tackles issues such as the rights of rural women, law and marriage, employment, health, education, political and public life participation of women.

It affirms the reproductive rights of women and targets culture and tradition as influential forces shaping gender roles and family relations.
